Pound Puppies: Anyone remember them?
I've had this annoying theme song stuck in my head for the last twenty-three years or so; today, I finally did a search for "pound puppies" on YouTube. I found a cartoon intro that was disturbingly full of anti-feline rhetoric, but aside from that, it filled me with nostalgia for my early childhood in the early 80s. I don't think a lot of people remember the "Pound Puppies," because they weren't cool in the same way Jem, Rainbow Brite or Strawberry Shortcake were, but they definitely deserve a place in the pantheon of 80s cartoon greats (or at least goods). When I was a little girl, I was given a Pound Puppy radio. It was basically a stuffed animal glued on top of a cheap red radio, but I was riveted. Then Teddy Ruxpin came along, and I moved on. Sorry, Pound Puppies!

i definitely remember them! i had a pound puppy, and a couple of pound kitties too. one was actually my get-well gift when i got chicken pox. after a week of being sick, my parents drove me to the toy store, and since i still was a little sick, i stood outside while my dad brought boxes of pound puppies up to the window, till i pointed to the one i wanted. i wish these cartoons were still on tv, because i'd watch them all the time. ~joelle
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I LOVED the pound puppies. Especially the movie. I still have four or five of them in my toy trunk upstairs!
ReplyDeleteOooooh!!! I loved Pound Puppies!
ReplyDeleteAll I wanted for my 5th birthday was the stuffed toy of the one in the purple dress. Every time we went to the shops we had to check she was still there, then when I got her for my birthday we were inseperable!
How is it possible that I forgot about pound puppies!

I LOVED the Pound Puppies! I had many of them in stuffed animal form, but my favorite was named Marc. My dad's name is also Marc, but Marc the Pound Puppy was named after my ophthalmologist (also Marc). This troubled my father.
